Vocabulary Definitions
Bboy Academy defines specific concepts a certain way to eliminate confusion. Our definitions might not be shared by all bboy schools of thought, these are specific to Bboy Academy:
- Powermove – a Powermove as any movement which contains an explosion. (See 3 Explosions)
- Rotation – Spinning or turning on a center-point (axis) in the transverse plane. Clockwise and Counter. If you were laying down on a clock-face rotating, your belly button would be the axis, and your feet and head would be pointing at the numbers, but you'd always be laying on your back.
- Turn-over or Roll-over– what a log does when it goes down a hill. Axis is through the body rather than in the ground. If you were laying down on a clock-face and you rolled over, you'd roll right off the clock.
3 Eplosions
We have identified 3 types of explosions. An explosion refers to the moment of let go when you either let go of the ground or your momentum takes over sustaining you in motion.
- SINGULAR EXPLOSION -a single, brief, and isolated explosion such as in a flip or aerial. The moment your feet leave the ground.
- SUSTAINED EXPLOSION -a single explosion that carries for a while as in a backspin or headspin float.
- PERPETUAL EXPLOSIONS -an explosion that leads to another explosion and can repeat indefinitely as in a windmill, air flare, flare, or tapping headspins.
What separates Powermoves from Stylizing?
Both can be powerful. Both can be styled out, but what distinguishes a "Powermove" from Stylizing (the dancy stuff)? The differentiation is the presence of an Explosion. The difference between a Baby Swipe (2 Step) and Master Swipe.

SWIPE FAMILY
- Baby Swipe aka The 2 Step -not technically a Powermove, there is no explosion, thus we categorize it as a style move.
- Master Swipe (the power version of the 2 Step).
- Anchored or as Bboy Storm would put it 'In Your Face Style' – Stay facing on direction; every swipe lands with you facing the same direction; in place or traveling down a line.
- Rotating aka "Around the World" (Rotating around while turning-over; Landing facing different direction).
- 1 Leg (anchored/rotating keeping one foot in the air).
- 2 Leg (anchored/ rotating Landing both feet on the ground).
- Fore-leg (1 Legged variation landing on the fist foot).
- Hind-leg (1 legged variation landing on the second foot).
- Air Flare -Basically a no-legged swipe.
- Baby Air Flare -ankles crossed with knees bent and apart

WINDMILLS
- Backspin -Windmill's predecessor; (rotation only, no turn-over).
- Beginner Level Mills:
- Turtle Mills – Windmills on your hands utilizing the stabbing. It is the first level windmill that would be the next logical step once you've mastered a good spin from backspins. Bboy Academy calls this a 'Training Mill' like training wheels on a bike, it's a pseudo-mill. If using the hands to generate power, the explosion is the weakest of all mills and possibly not technically a powermove because there is no real explosion. The energy is generated by pushing with the hands from Turtle position through a candlestick and back to a turtle position. Until your energy is generated from the legs, it's not a true powermove (See Forearm Mills). The Turtle mill is still an important phase to master. It teaches several dynamics such as timing and coordination of all body parts and strengthening the hands in generating power for launching into true (powerful) windmills. Note power here is generated by the upper body.
- Forearm Mills – the second level windmill after mastering the Turtle Mill that would be the first of the true Powermove windmills. This mill rolls over the forearms while hands are held as a fist. This subtracts the ability to generate your power from the hands and forces the generator down to the legs. The legs can generate much more power than the hands and more efficiently. while the forearms-and-fists provide a sufficient buffer to allow for the turnover without smashing your face into the floor. Note the power here is generated by the lower body.
- Punch Mills – not really an "official" windmill, but more of an understanding of the concept of generating your power by an upper body torque. Generating torque by the upper body: After rolling across the shoulders as you turnover to face the ground, (hook) punch between your body and the floor. The torque will carry you through the entire frontside to get you back to your other shoulder for the next roll. More than carrying you over to complete the mill, it is the mechanism that keeps your windmill perpetual.
- The Expert Level Mills
- Nasties aka Ball Breakers – windmills holding your crotch. Rolling across the shoulders when facing up, the turnover rolls across the forehead when facing down.
- Kyriaki Mills -hopping shoulder to the other shoulder, catching air during the turn over. Named after Bboy Kuriaki from battle at the Roxy in the movie Beat Street (4:20).
- Mummies – Hugging yourself, arms in the position of a mummy.
- Tombstones or " T's " – Both legs together, hands touching toes
- Bottle Openers – One leg is straight the other bends and crosses the straight leg, ankle over the knee.
- HandCuffs – Locking fingers or holding wrist behind your back.
- Half cuffs – Locking finger THROUGH your legs. one arm in front, one arm behind, fingers locked between your legs.
- Icy-Ice – freezing the stabbed part of the windmill at the very last point before turning over (stabbed facing sideways); The hand becomes the center axis while the head slides in a circle around the hand. The move was named after Bboy Icy Ice from Dynamic Rockers when he popularized it in the ending scene in the movie Beat Street (2:53 & 2:57).
- Halo (USA) aka Traxx (Europe) – entire windmill takes place on the head, shoulders never touch the ground; head is in constant contact to the ground; if you were to perform a halo on a big ink pad, you'd only have ink on the palms of your hand and an ink halo around your head.
- Air Track or Air Traxx – somewhat a precursor to Air Flare at least in terms of the evolutionary history of the creation of the Air Flare; a windmill pushing off the ground to do a full turnover in the air and catching with the hands to bring the body back to the ground. Alternating one rolling across the shoulders coming back around to the hands and pushin of the ground.
- Babymills – legs pulled in close to body; no pumping.
- Mudspills – Legs pulled, not crossed; pumping.
- Munchmills – Legs pulled in, crossing at the ankles, pumping.
- Supermans aka Bellymills aka Chestmills – "Supermans" was a name dubbed in the 1980's (see Ultramans). A floor mill rotating while turning over across your upper mid-section. Note: although it seems flat on the ground you still want to keep your hips as high off the ground as possible.
- Ultramans – arms straight above the head. The turnover takes place across the palm of the hands. Mistakenly referred to as "Supermans" by post year 2000 bboys not knowing there was already a move called Supermans.

FLARES
- Pike Flare – 2 leg Flares, legs are together.
- Bottle Opener or Cork Screw – One leg is crossed, ankle over the knee, the way a man would sit with his legs crossed. Imagine legs making the number 4.
- Thomas Flare – Legs out and apart like a "V"; Kurt Thomas did not invent the flare, he was the first to do it in an international competition, so the move was named after him.
- Baby Flare – Legs crossed at the ankles and pulled in, knees bent out and apart).
- Lotus Flare – legs folded inside each other in a Buddhist meditation position.

(STABBED) HAND-SPINS & WALKS
- Handglide -spinning on one hand in the single stabbed turtle position; a spinning Table Top
- Air Wolf -Spinning like the Handglide , but stabbed on your side and facing sideways instead of facing toward the ground. Legs usually held in tandem.
- Spinning Air Chair -Spinning like the Air Wolf, but stabbed towards back (edge of glute) and facing upwards towards the sky.
- Pogo Like a handglide, but hopping on the stabbed hand while push-pumping on the ground with the second hand to perpetuate the bounce.
- Jack Hammer (like the Pogo, but without the use of the second hand; a one handed Pogo.
- Turtles / Crabs :
- Hopping Turtles -double stabs, hopping alternating hands.
- Turntles; Crabwalk -double stab alternating hands, turning in circles propelling your body around one spot.
- Monkey Walks – like Turtles/Crabs without the elbow stab; arms are straight, head is up higher than hips, hips are behind hands , legs are out V'ed out trailing behind hips; think of a Planche walking in a circle, legs are apart.
- UFO -Like a Monkey Walk with legs bent in.
- L-Sit Walk -Walking in circles in L-Seat position.
- V-Sit Walk – like L-Sit but with legs split open and hands in between legs.
